Javier Martínez
We are delighted to receive as our guest of honor medical historian dr. Javier Martínez Antonio, during the workshop we are holding on 9 October. Javier Martínez, who is Professor at the University of Zaragoza, has done extensive research on the history of medicine, public health, and humanitarianism in modern Morocco, including quarantines in the mediterranean, colonial health systems in Morocco, colonial chemical warfare, military medicine, and transnational medical humanitarianism and other topics encompassing eras from the late 18th to the 20th centuries.
During this closed workshop, we will discuss his work on International Sanitary Conferences and the French attempts political and sanitary hegemony in the mediterranean world in the 19th century. Furthermore, Gert Huskens and Ali Al Tuma, will present their findings on sanitary internationalism in Morocco.
Javier Martínez is author of several studies on sanitary internationalism, including his 2017 article: “Mad at Tangier: Hygienist discourses, mental disorders, and European competition for hegemony in early twentieth-century Morocco”. The Journal of the Middle East and Africa, 8, 1, 57-73; as well as his book: La otra Guerra de África.
