Fighting Pandemics from Below, 1792 – 1942

Charles Ough

Charles Ough is a PhD Candidate in the History of International Relations at Utrecht University. Working under the supervision of Dr Ozan Ozavci, Dr Enno Maessen and Dr Ali Al Tuma, Mr Ough’s research focuses on the history of Mount Lebanon in the latter half of the long nineteenth century. Where previous studies of the period have focused on the top-down histories of Western and Ottoman imperial interventions in Lebanon, his PhD thesis, like the Cooperation project, aims to illuminate bottom-up processes for peace through a study of subaltern Lebanese actors in the period.

Mr Ough works alongside the Cooperation team and has previous experience studying history at both undergraduate and master’s level for his BA in History at SOAS, University of London and MSc in Modern Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Oxford. He also brings knowledge of information science from a previous career in academic librarianship at the University of Oxford’s Bodleian Library.
