We are proud to announce that on 12 June, Evren Çakıl will present at the Dynamizing and Decentring Empires. A Recalibration of the History of the Political conference at the University of Münster, which will take place between 11 and 13 June 2026.

He will present his paper “The Superior Council of Health in Istanbul as a Site of Trans-imperial Cooperation”. In this paper, he examines the Council established after a plague outbreak, which was not a result of, but a remedy for, Ottoman local actors working closely with Europeans due to limited medical knowledge on quarantine. Drawing on Ottoman and British archival sources, he examines the Council’s implementation of health reforms while simultaneously fostering trans-imperial cooperation during the 1830s and 1850s.
